Transitioning from cot to mattress
There is no exact age when every child should move from a cot into a kids single bed. Most children make the change between around 18 months and 3½ years, depending on their size, development and whether they are trying to climb out of their cot.
For parents navigating toddler transitioning, the safest approach is to look at the whole sleep setup rather than the bed alone. Choose a fairly firm, flat mattress that fits the frame correctly, avoid gaps where a child could become trapped, consider a lower bed height for younger children, install guard rails correctly and make sure the bedroom itself is fully child-safe.
When comparing safe mattresses for kids, look beyond marketing terms. Check the mattress firmness, fit, age suitability, washable layers and whether the materials have been independently tested against recognised standards.
The best first bed is one that feels safe and familiar for your child now, while still giving them room to grow.
