From Cot to Big Kid Bed: Why the Right First Bed Can Grow With Your Child
Moving your child out of their cot and into their first big kid bed is one of those exciting milestones that seems to arrive incredibly quickly.
For many parents, the next step is a toddler bed, floor bed, or low-to-the-ground Montessori-style bed. These can be wonderful options for giving little ones greater independence while keeping them close to the floor as they adjust to sleeping in a bigger bed.
But there is one thing that is easy to overlook when choosing that first bed:
What happens when they grow out of it?
Many toddler beds and floor beds are designed for just one stage of childhood. They work beautifully for the early transition out of a cot, but a few years later parents may find themselves shopping for another bed altogether.
Then, as children get older again, their sleep needs change once more.
That is exactly why we designed the TeddyDen differently.
One Bed for More Than One Stage
The TeddyDen is designed to grow with your child — from their first move out of the cot, through their bigger-kid years and eventually into the sleepover stage.
Rather than purchasing a separate toddler bed, then another kids bed later, the TeddyDen can simply be reconfigured as your child's needs change.
It starts as a low, Montessori-inspired bed and later transforms into a higher kids bed frame suitable for older children and tweens.
And the best part?
You do not need to replace the bed frame to make that transition.
You simply flip it over.
Stage One: A Low Montessori-Style Toddler Bed
When your child is first transitioning from a cot, sleeping close to the ground can make the move into a bigger bed feel a little less daunting.
In its low position, the TeddyDen sits just 10cm off the ground, creating a low-to-the-ground Montessori-style floor bed.
This lower height can be ideal for younger children as they become more independent getting in and out of bed.
Unlike many traditional floor beds, however, the TeddyDen has been designed with the next stage already in mind.
Your child gets the benefit of a low toddler bed now, without needing to replace the entire bed once they are ready for something higher.
A Repositionable Guardrail That Adapts With the Bed
Another feature that makes the Teddy Den especially flexible is its repositionable guardrail.
Every Teddy Den comes with one guardrail included as standard, which can be configured in several different ways depending on your child's age, room layout and sleeping needs.
The guardrail can be fitted on either the left-hand or right-hand side of the bed frame in both the low and high bed positions.
If you would prefer a guardrail on both sides of the bed, an additional guardrail can be purchased separately.
That means the bed can be adapted to suit where it sits in the room, whether it is positioned against a wall or placed more centrally.
And the guardrail does not become redundant when your child gets older.
In the Teddy Den's higher configuration, the guardrail can also be repositioned and used as a headboard.
One component. Multiple uses. Different stages of childhood.
Stage Two: Flip It Into a Bigger Kids Bed
Eventually, your little one will not feel quite so little anymore.
When they are ready to move beyond the low Montessori-style setup, there is no need to start shopping for another bed frame.
Simply flip the Teddy Den over.
In its higher position, the bed frame sits 23cm off the ground, giving it the look and feel of a more traditional big kid bed.
The higher configuration is ideal as children move through their school years and into their tween stage, when they may want their bedroom to feel a little more grown-up.
The same bed that supported their first nights out of the cot can now become the bed they use for years to come.
Stage Three: Make Room for Sleepovers
Then comes another childhood milestone: sleepovers.
Once your child reaches the sleepover stage, the higher Teddy Den configuration allows you to add Teddy's Trundle, designed to fit neatly underneath the bed frame.
The trundle creates an additional sleep space when friends come to stay, without requiring another permanent bed in the room.
When it is not being used, it can be stored underneath the Teddy Den, helping you make better use of the available bedroom space.
So the same bed can evolve from:
First toddler bed → Montessori-style floor bed → big kid bed → tween bed → sleepover bed.
Why Buying for Just One Stage Can Cost More in the Long Run
When children move out of a cot, it can be tempting to focus only on what they need right now.
A small toddler bed or floor bed may feel like the obvious choice.
But children grow quickly, and a bed designed exclusively for the toddler stage can mean purchasing another frame only a few years later.
Choosing a bed that can adapt as your child grows means thinking beyond the first transition.
Instead of asking:
"What bed does my toddler need today?"
It can be worth asking:
"Will this bed still work for them in a few years?"
That is where the TeddyDen is different.
It has been designed not as a temporary toddler bed, but as a long-term kids bed system that can change with your child.
Designed for the Whole Sleep Journey
A child's bedroom changes enormously between toddlerhood and the tween years.
Their independence grows. Their tastes change. Their routines change. And eventually, their friends start staying over too.
Their bed should be able to change with them.
With two height configurations, a fully repositionable guardrail and the option to add a trundle later, the Teddy Den is designed to support multiple stages of childhood without requiring you to replace the bed frame each time.
The Teddy Den grows with your child:
-
10cm low position for a Montessori-inspired toddler or floor bed
-
23cm high position for a more traditional big kid or tween bed
-
One repositionable guardrail included
-
Guardrail can be placed on the left or right-hand side
-
Guardrail works in both the low and high configurations
-
Add a second guardrail separately if you would like one on both sides
-
In the high position, the guardrail can also be reused as a headboard
-
Add Teddy's Trundle underneath the higher configuration when sleepover days arrive
From Their First Big Bed to Their First Sleepover
The move out of a cot is not just about choosing your child's next bed.
It is the beginning of an entirely new chapter in their sleep journey.
The Teddy Den was created so that the bed you choose for that first milestone does not have to be replaced at the next one.
From those first independent nights close to the floor, to their bigger-kid years, tween bedroom and first sleepovers, the Teddy Den is designed to grow right alongside them.
One bed. Multiple stages. Years of sleep, growing and memories.
