Do You Know What Your Child Is Really Sleeping On?
The hidden side of kids' mattress hygiene, and why we designed the Teddy Junior and Junior LUX mattresses differently.
We wash our children's sheets, change their pillowcases and make sure their beds are clean.
But have you ever stopped to think about what's building up inside their mattress?
Over time, mattresses can accumulate dead skin cells, dust, dust mites and other allergens. And with most traditional mattresses having fixed covers that can't be removed and washed, much of this build-up can go unnoticed for years.
At Teddy, we believe a kids mattress should be designed with more than just comfort and support in mind. Hygiene matters too.
What Does the Research Say?
Dust mites are microscopic creatures that feed on dead skin cells and thrive in warm, humid environments like bedding and mattresses.
Their droppings and body fragments contain proteins that can trigger allergies, asthma symptoms, sneezing, congestion and eczema flare-ups in sensitive children.
A New Zealand study published in the New Zealand Medical Journal found that mattresses over 10 years old contained significantly higher levels of dust mite allergens.
It's an important reminder that just because a mattress looks clean doesn't mean allergens aren't building up beneath the surface.
Why We Designed the Teddy Junior Differently
Kids will be kids. From sweaty nights to accidental spills and toilet-training mishaps, their mattresses go through a lot.
That's why our Teddy Junior and Junior LUX kids mattresses feature two built-in layers of protection.
1. Removable, Waterproof & Machine-Washable Outer Cover
Unlike traditional mattresses with fixed covers, Teddy Junior mattresses feature a removable, waterproof sleeping-surface cover designed to help protect against everyday spills and accidents.
Simply unzip the top cover panel, machine wash on a gentle 40°C cycle and line dry.
No complicated cleaning process. Just a practical way to maintain a fresher, cleaner kids mattress.
2. Breathable Microfilament Inner Barrier
Beneath the outer cover, we've gone one step further.
The foam core is fully encased in a specially designed breathable microfilament fabric, made from extremely fine polyester and nylon fibres.
Its densely structured fibres provide several important benefits:
-
Dust mite protection: Creates a physical barrier designed to prevent dust mites from passing through.
-
Allergen barrier: Helps reduce the movement of dust mite allergen particles into and out of the mattress core.
-
Breathable design: Allows air and moisture vapour to pass through.
-
Additional core protection: Helps shield the internal foam from everyday dust and contaminants.
It's an extra layer of protection built right into the mattress.
But Isn't That What a Mattress Protector Is For?
Mattress protectors are useful, and we still recommend one for additional protection.
But many standard fitted protectors only cover the top sleeping surface and sometimes the sides, leaving the underside of the mattress exposed.
Fully enclosed mattress protectors are available, but they're generally an additional purchase.
With Teddy Junior and Junior LUX, we've already incorporated a washable outer sleeping surface and an additional protective inner encasement.
Because we believe mattress hygiene shouldn't be an afterthought — or something parents have to purchase separately.
A Smarter Approach to Kids' Sleep
When choosing a kids bed or children's mattress, comfort and support are essential. But being able to care for and maintain that mattress over the years is just as important.
While no mattress can promise a completely allergen-free environment, thoughtful design can make everyday mattress care much easier.
At Teddy, we've designed our kids mattresses for real family life — combining comfort, support and practical built-in protection.
Because what your child sleeps on matters. And so does what's underneath.
